The heart of interior design is the art of furniture placement, better known as simply rearranging the furniture.  The most inexpensive method for gaining an interior design impact is successfully placing furniture.  It is cheap and easy and accomplished in a short period of time.

Questions to consider when beginning your project are:  What kind of mood do you want to create in the space?  Do you want a warm and cozy environment, or a trendy and modern space?  How many people on any given day or evening will occupy the space? Are there small children to consider in the placement of furniture, lamps and accessories?  Will the room be used for tasks such as reading that will require table lamps?  Will you entertain frequently?  Which pieces MUST remain in the space?

The answers to these and other questions will help you to create seating arrangements and furniture placement schemes that work will for daily living, entertaining and home based work situations.  The first step is to establish a focal point.  This could be a fireplace or large piece of furniture placed on the most dominate wall in the room.  Once the focal point is established place the next largest piece of furniture most likely facing the focal point to visually balance the room.  All of your arrangements must relate well to the rooms focal point.  Most pieces will face the focal point either straight on, or with the furnishings angled.  Angling chairs and accent furnishings can soften the rooms appearance.

In common living areas an easy way to establish balance is to assemble seating in the shape of a “U” that faces the focal point.  You can also try different variations by slightly angling some of the chairs and end tables.  It is also best to avoid placing furniture against the walls other than the focal point.
